Is there a way to auto format an edge based on a custom attribute?

I would like to have an edge automatically format its colour based on the condition of a custom edge attribute.  Is this possible?

It is not possible to automatically update the color (or any other property) of an edge when you change one of the edge's custom property values. The best you can do is to create a properties mapper configuration that sets edge colors based on the values your custom property and manually run the properties mapper each time you change your custom property's value.

Ok.  Having to open the properties manager via menu and hit apply each time is tedious.  Is there a way to map a shortcut to this instead?
