1. Produce a more centered tree ... instead of adding to the right in a top-down tree. I'm finding I can do this with some manual tweaking and maybe that is best, although you need the tree to be 'finished' otherwise wasted work.
2. Allow the order fo the 'children' to be determined either by the order in which the are linked to the family node, or some variable. The goal here is to list the children in order from oldest to youngest ... I think that is what most people expect.
