white space click causes small rectangle - how to stop?

Question

Without thinking about it, I tend to click on the background before doing what I intend to do. This causes a small rectangle to appear.

Is there a way to turn that off, so clicking on white space/background does not do this? It is very annoying because then I have to remove it.
