Every time I left click on an editor, yEd pastes a node I created long ago. How do I get rid of this?

"File" -> "Preferences", tab "Editor", option "Create Node on Background Click"

Ah, that's helpful. But now I'm loading .tgf files and every node picks up that same image icon. Is there a default node definition somewhere?
I just now found "reset defaults" on the context menu for the "current elements" palette section. Thanks for your help. yEd has been an amazingly useful tool for me for many, many years.

Yes, there is. Please see section ‘Palette’ Tool Window in the yEd Manual for details. The current default styles have a blue background in the corresponding palette sections.
