add properties to a node in palette?

Question

I have created a new palette item called shoe.  I would like to have properties/attributes for shoe:  size, color, use, etc.

When the user creates an instance of the palette item on the canvas, they can optionally fill in values - free form is good enough.

 

I can't seem to add properties that can be filled in via the properties window.  I have no reason to display the properties.

Unfortunately, the templates in the palette cannot have custom properties. Custom properties always need to be specified for the current document (using "Edit" -> "Manage Custom Properties").
