yEd canvas not loading properly

When starting yEd, I'm getting a grey window without the UI elements after the startup banner closes.

 

I've tried Java 6, 7 and 8 on archlinux.

Was that with OpenJDK (i.e. official archlinux packages) or with Oracle's official Java Runtime Environment which has to be downloaded from Java SE Downloads and installed manually? If the former, please try the latter. If the latter, you are probably out of luck.

This is definitely a Java problem, not much that can be done on the yEd end of things, unfortunately.
