Can one adjust the z-order of a line?

I would like to bring a line up to the edge of an object within a group. Is there a way to do this? (I could probably do it by not grouping objects, but grouping is a perfect concept for my application in all other respects.)

The z-order of an edge is determined by the z-order of its two nodes and the"Paint Nodes over Edges" setting from "File" -> "Preferences".
