Steps to create family tree

I'm brand new to yEd and trying very hard (and without success) to understand how to import a .ged file and begin a family tree. I'm on yEd 3.23.1 for Mac. Thanks for your help.

To open a GEDCOM file, go to "File" -> "Open" and change the file type in the file chooser to "GEDCOM Genealogical Data (*.ged)".
