On Mac, the open/save/export dialogs lose focus when they open

On my Mac, when I open a dialog with Cmd+E or CMD+O, the dialog loses focus immediately. This forces me to use the mouse to interact with dialog, as the keyboard cannot be used until the dialog receives focus from a mouse click.

This seems to happen for the native file selection dialog only. You can try using the the cross-platform file selection dialog instead of the macOS native dialog. You can switch from the native dialog to the cross-platform dialog in "File" -> "Preferences", tab "General", option "File Chooser Dialog".

It works fine, and it's good enough for me. I would still try to fix the native-dialog issue, though. :)
