where are the tabs, I cannot find anything called scope tab

I am trying to create a family tree but writing detail in the boxes is proving elusive.

Can you provide more details on what you mean by "scope tab"?
In which way is adding labels to nodes "elusive"? I.e. in which way do the mechanism for adding text not work for you? yEd offers several ways to enter text, e.g. "select node, press F2, enter text" or "select node, go to properties view in the lower right corner, click into 'Text', click '...', enter text, click 'Ok'".
