How to create a tournament diagram from a spreadsheet

I have been trying to create a tournament diagram, also known as a bracket, from a spreadsheet. I have tried importing data from Excel using the family tree example, but have been unable to produce anything close to a tournament layout (or family tree even). Can anyone help please?
