You can install yEd even if you do not have Java already installed. In this case, you will need to use one of the Windows installers with embedded Java runtime environment. (The Java runtime environment that comes with these installers will not be registered in your system and thus will be effectively available only to your yEd installation.)
You cannot use yEd with no Java at all. You can, however, use yEd Live without Java.
