is it correct that custom edge properties cannot / do not influence graph layout?

the import chapter of the yed manual shows an excel import sheet with a column called 'weight'. this column is declared as 'custom edge property'. so the values of 'weight' will not / cannot be factored in the organic layout of the graph? this 'weight' is rather a kind of label of the edge?

Yes and yes. Currently, only yEd's properties mapper evaluates custom properties.
