Is there a limit to the number of elements and/or file size

0 votes

Hi,

We are looking for an alternative to Visio on PC and OmniGraffle on Mac.  Something that works cross platform would be excellent.

Our requirement is to paste full size screen grabs of each page of our website into the yEd workspace and then for each page paste different colored dots on each link.  The page and dots are then grouped.

We then draw lines (with arrows to show direction, typically only on one end) connecting the appropriate dots.  These lines must stay connected (elastic) when any page or pages are moved within the workspace.

We call the collection of pages a "flowmap".  Flowmaps provide us a clear view of the entire site - a big help toward developing further site improvements.

The challenge is that full resolution screen grabs filesizes are already quite large and the number of screen grabs can also be very large (into the many hundreds of unique screen grabs).

Before we go too far with evaluating yEd, we'd appreciate knowing if it can handle our requiremements?

Note please that the final workspace is then printed on a large format 60" continuous printer.

Thank you,

In theory, there is no upper limit for number of elements and/or file size.

In practice, your computer's RAM is the main limitting factor - especially when using lots of large image nodes. Moreover, by default yEd is configured to use at most 512MB of RAM. However, this limit may be adjusted as explained here.

Regarding printouts, yEd does provide print configuration dialogs for setting up printers and page sizes (see "File" -> "Print Preview", buttons "Page" and "Settings"). The available configuration options do depend on your printer driver, though.
