how to create labels in semantic networks

Question

In the illustration of the semantic netwok on the web site the connectors (edge) are split either side of the labels, so they don't interfere with reading the label text.

Can anyone tell me how to acheive this, I "think" I have exhausted all the label options and I can't work out how to do this.

Those labels simply have a white background. Select one label, use CTR+A to select them all, then set the desired background color in the properties view in yEd' lower right corner. Optionally, also set a border color. To place the labels on the edge, choose placement "Centered: Center".
