How to import labels to display in boxes for org chart.

Greetings,

I'm importing an org chart from an xls and I would like to put some information in each box for each person, like Mike is an analyst and sarah is the CEO. How is this done?

You will need a dedicated column for each type of information in your spreadsheet. Upon import, these data columns have to be included in the node list data range. yEd will then import said data as custom properties. Using an appropriate properties mapper configuration, it is possible to apply the data in the custom properties to e.g. labels of your nodes. If you prepare such a properties mapper configuration beforehand, yEd's Excel Import offers the option to automatically map the data/properties on import (see tab "Presentation", section "Nodes", option "Use Configuration" in the Excel Import settings).

Greetings Mr. Thomas,

I'm having a bit of a hard time following your instructions. I've included a few pictures linked below to ensure we are on the same page and we can both see what I am working with.

Import window, Data tab: http://i.imgur.com/8DNkDkn.png

As shown here, I have a spreadsheet with multiple columns. The Source ID is column B and Target ID is column C.

Column D is the value I would like to include in the Source ID, "Parent", box.

This window always seems to have the "Use configuration" and "Configuration" options greyed out. I'm not %100 sure how to configure this tab.

Could you provide screenshots exampling how to set up the import?

Thank you for your time

There seems to be a misunderstanding on how Excel import works. Each row in the edge list "Data Range" will result in an edge in your diagram. All the data in cells in those rows will be associated to those edges. Moreover, for each distinct value in the columns designated as "Column of Source IDs" and "Column of Target IDs" there will be a distinct node in your diagram. If you need to associate data to those nodes, you need a separate data range (which is designated in the "Data Range" setting in section "Node List") where each cell in the column designated as "Column of Node IDs" has a unique value and that value matches one of the values used as source or target ID.

That said, searching for "Excel" with the forum search will turn up lots of questions with answers that include sample Excel import settings. E.g. Relational Entities in excel file to directed graph, Import Excel: Group Name not importing correctly, and Multi-level groups from Excel to name but a few. Moreover, section Import of Excel Files in the yEd Manual does come with an illustrative example as well.

I am struggling with this too
Any chance you can show this with a sample file and some screen shots?

The links in my previous comment do contain samples and screen shots.

If you have a specific question, I am more than happy to try to answer that question. E.g. if you upload a sample spreadsheet and a screen shot of your Excel import settings I will try to correct/adjust your data and settings.

However, I do not think creating an arbitrary example will help - after all the existing examples do not seem to help either.
