Go to "Help" -> "Example Graphs" to open one of the example graphs that come with yEd.

While the actual sample data is part of the yEd "executable" and not available as separate files on disk, you can save an opened example graph like any other diagram, if you want to have a GraphML file for the example.

Interface text not respecting OS-level display scaling.

System information: Framework 16 (AMD, integrated graphics) - native resolution is 2560x1600 at 150% UI scaling.

Recently tried using yEd on my laptop, but the UI text is far too small to read. Some of the interface scales correctly (top menu text, icons) but most of it is not. (I would attach a more helpful screenshot, but it seems too low-resolution to really show the problem.)

The GraphML standard is mostly about defining the structure or 'topology' of a graph, roughly speaking the set of nodes and their connections/edges. Additionally, there is a very generic attributes extensions which describes how to add data to nodes, edges and the graph as such.
However, the standard does not define how geometry data (e.g. node sizes and node locations) or visual properties like colors and/or labels have to be represented in GraphML.

Thus, each application that wants to store geometry or visual properties in GraphML has to come up with its own (sub-) format to store these important properties.

So, if you open a GraphML file that was not created in yEd, yEd is able to read only the structure of the graph from said file but nothing else. In such a case, yEd will use default values for the style, location, and size of all nodes. This means all nodes will look the same, have the same size, and will be located at the same point.

To see how many nodes and edges there are in your graph, run one of yEd's layout algorithms. "Layout" -> "Hierarchical" is usually a good choice, if you do not need to highlight specific structural properties but only want to resolve node overlaps.

No, it is not possible to export SVG documents from yEd without using yEd's UI.

This is intentional.
We do not want people to be able to use yEd in an automated process. (And offering a command line interface for SVG export would facilitate using yEd in an automated process.) Indeed, the yEd Software License Agreement explicitly forbids doing so (see 1. License Conditions).

yEd is built upon the commercial diagramming library yFiles and yEd's SVG export is implemented with the yFiles extension package ySVG. (Both of these are closed source libraries.)

When using a layout algorithm to arrange a graph, the quality of the result very much depends on the structure of the graph. And in surprisingly many cases, the graph structure is really all that matters. However, there are cases where semantics matter so much that it is very hard to get a good result from a general-purpose layout algorithm. In these cases, you need to use a domain-specific algorithm to get good results.

Your graph seems to be a family tree. And family trees fall in the "semantics matter" category. I.e. the only algorithm that really works well for family trees is, well, "Layout" -> "Family Tree", because this algorithm knows about "male", "female", and "family" nodes. (The family tree layout algorithm does not support the radial arrangement you seem to be looking for, though.)

In short, I think radial layout (or any other layout algorithm except for the family tree layout algorithm) is not a good choice for arranging your graph.

To answer your questions:

The distance depends on the settings "Minimal Circle Distance" and "Minimal Node Distance" and the size and number of nodes on the circle. And while you can try to reduce the value of the two distance settings or the size of your nodes, you probably cannot do much about the number of nodes on the circle. The algorithm will always ensure that its circles are large enough to prevent the nodes on a given circle from overlapping each other. Moreover, the algorithm treats all nodes as circular disks when calculating the radius of a circle. As a result, the algorithm usually does not find the minimum radius that would satisfy the "a circle's nodes do not overlap each other" rule for rectangular nodes. (The algorithm's approximation for the minimum radius depends of the aspect ratio of your nodes. If said aspect ratio is close to 1:1, then the calculated radius will be close to the minimum radius. If the aspect ratio is very large or very small, the calculated radius might be a lot greater than the minimum radius.)
In your sample graph, there seem to be really a lot of nodes on the "daughter - son - son - son - son - wife" circle. As a result, I really doubt that said circle's radius can be reduced much.
Radial layout has no notion of "husband" or "wife". As such, there is no way to tell the algorithm to keep a husband node close to its wife node.
(Actually, this is a shortcoming of the yEd's settings UI. The algorithm supports the notion of node types and if you would assign a unique node type for all "married" nodes, the algorithm would indeed try to place these nodes close together. However, the settings UI does not offer a way to specify arbitrary node types. It only offers to derive node types from node color or node label. While the algorithm supports the notion of node types, it will only "group" nodes of the same type, if these nodes are on the same circle, too. This is not the case for the husband and wife nodes in your graph.)
This is part of why the family tree layout works well for family trees: it knows about husbands and wifes (in a way) and places them close to each other.
The "dots" are nodes that represent GEDCOM FAM tags. These are part of your GEDCOM data set. If you do not want to have those nodes, you may not use yEd's GEDCOM import to create your graph. Or, if you import your graph from a GEDCOM file, you will have to remove the family nodes manually afterwards. However, this will probably be a lot or work, because there is no tool that can retain and reconnect edges in a clever way when removing nodes.
Of course, if you remove the family nodes, the family tree layout algorithm will not work (well) for your graph anymore either.

There is no layout algorithm in yEd that can produce the result from the linked image.
"Layout" -> "Radial" uses a similar concept and is probably the closest you can get to the desired result with automatic layout in yEd.

The only way to reproduce the tree from the linked image in yEd would be by manually placing all nodes and manually creating bends in the connecting edges. But this would probably so much work as to not be really feasible.

It slightly depends on how you started edge creation.

If you dragged and dropped an edge style template from yEd's palette onto an existing node, move the mouse over the desired target node and click the left mouse button.

If you started edge creation by pressing the left mouse button on a node that is not selected, drag the mouse over the desired target node (while still pressing the left mouse button) and release the left mouse button over the desired target node.

If you started edge creation by pressing the left mouse button on a node that is not selected and you already released the left mouse button on empty space (to create a bend for the new edge), move the mouse over the desired target node and click the left mouse button.

Chiming in to revive this request some 13 years later.

It is exceedingly difficult to draw a sequence diagram. The blocks must be manually resized, and the message arrows need to be dragged manually, both endpoints. If I resize an activation element to make room for more messages, the incident ends of the existing message arrows get moved around and I must then manually readjust them in order for the message arrows to become horizontal again.

The diagrams look sloppy because there aren't set points on the activation nodes on which to attach the messages.

Summary of features:

P1 Activation nodes with many snap points along each vertical edge of the node.
P1 The positions of the snap points remain fixed relative to the top under resize.
P2 Unattached lifeline edges.
P2 Node + lifeline combo for components.

yEd supports (de-)serializing custom properties only with its GraphML file format.

All other graph exchange formats in yEd (i.e.YGF, GML, XGML, and TGF) are legacy formats that are not updated with improvements anymore. This has been the case for a very long time (I think well over ten years).

This leaves you the following options:

Open your XGML files in yEd, manually add your custom properties (see "Edit" -> "Manage Custom Properties"), save your diagram to GraphML, and work with GraphML from then on.
Create an XSLT stylesheet that transforms your XGML documents into GraphML documents and use yEd's support for "XML + XSL" to open your XGML files through your stylesheet. If your stylesheet properly reproduces your custom properties in the resulting GraphML document, your custom properties will be available in yEd. If you want to edit the resulting diagram (especially custom property values), you will have to save your diagram in GraphML format.
Use yEd as an XGML viewer application only.

That said, I do not understand what you mean by "having a .cnfg is not really useful and should not be needed for such a simple process". yEd does not use that file name extension. (yEd offers the possibility to export properties mapper configurations to *.cnfx files, but these files do not store any graph information at all.)

Ok, so the hack thomas.behr suggested still works! Here are the exact steps I followed. Variations may also work, cannot comment.

1. In terminal,

$ cd ~/Library

$ rm -rf yWorks

2. In Finder, go to Applications folder and delete yEd.app

3. Download latest .dmg file from yWorks and double-click. This will mount the file (appears on desktop as a drive). When I do this, the installation procedure pops up a window that offers to drag the yEd.app to the applications folder. Don't drag it yet! Instead, double click on the yEd app.

4. Having cleared all the previous links, now yEd apparently has a fresh start, and the white-screen-of-death no longer appears. Make a new file, test it out, save it, etc.

5. When you reopen, yEd still works. Now you can drag the yEd icon to the Application folder as normal.

Whew, what a hassle! But yEd is such a great application, it is worth it.

I guess it depends on what you consider drastic. Yes, rendering quadratic or cubic curves is more expensive than rendering line segments. However, the extent depends an the platform as well as the actual number of path segments.

E.g. on my Windows machine running yEd on Java 8, rendering an quadratic curve edge with n curve segments takes approximately as long as rendering a polyline edge with 4*n line segments. Running yEd with Java 23, rendering the same n curve segments takes approximately as long as rendering 3*n line segments.

Considering the fact that it takes about 1 second to render about 500000 quadratic curve segments on my machine, the above mentioned performance difference rarely matters in practice, because if you rendered that many segments at the same time even on a high DPI display you would not be able to discern individual segments anymore.

What you are seeing is an artifact of automatic edge path adjustments when you open or close group nodes. This is a shortcoming of the yFiles library upon which yEd is built. Unfortunately, that version of yFiles is in maintenance mode and does not receive improvements anymore.

You can select the overlong edge, then run "Layout" -> "Edge Routing" -> "Straight Line" with option "Scope" set to "Selected Edges" to correct the edge path again. Alternatively, you can use "Tools" -> "Select Elements" to select the bends in the overlong edge and delete those bends.

I could not reproduce any problems with pasting nodes into groups.

You can try "Tools" -> "Select Elements". On tab "General", be sure to have only "Clear Selection First" or no option at all selected. Then select option "Use These Criteria" on tab "Edges" and set option "Select" to "Selected Nodes".

The downside of this approach is that your previously selected nodes will not be selected anymore, but the connected edges will be.

Aside from implementing yEd's GEDCOM import, we do not use or work with GEDCOM files. Thus, I don't know any tools that create GEDCOM files or can be used to edit GEDCOM files.

However, GEDCOM files are essentially text files. So, if your files are not too large, you might be able to rewrite your files yourself using a text editor.

Re 1.:

yEd does not support all GEDCOM features, indeed it ignores most top-level tags except INDI, FAM, and NOTE. Moreover, it does not not support GEDCOM pointers except for associating NOTE records to INDI records and INDI records to FAM records.

I would guess that the top-level OBJE record is referenced in an INDI record somewhere else in your example file. Since yEd does not support pointers, you need to restructure your GEDCOM file for yEd to import the FILE tag information.

I.e. instead of using references along the lines of

you actually need to inline the OBJE record information like so:

That very much depends on the actual structure of the GEDCOM tags in your GEDCOM file. E.g. for

the pattern (?s)1\s+OBJE.*2\s+FILE\s+(.+)$ together with the replacement $1 will work.
The pattern assumes that the FILE tag is the last sub-tag of the OBJE tag. If there are others tags after the file tag, the pattern has to be adjusted accordingly.

Alternativ zu dieser Vorgehensweise ist es auch möglich, ein Bild in eine Beschriftung einzufügen. Dazu selektieren Sie die Beschriftung und klicken dann in der Eigenschaftentabelle rechts unten rechts neben den Eintrag "Symboleigenschaften".

Das Anzeigen von Bildern kann abhängig von der Breite und Höhe der Bilder sehr viel Speicher benötigen. Daher sollten Bilder zuerst mit einem Bildbearbeitungsprogramm auf die Breite und Höhe skaliert werden mit der die Bilder in yEd bei Zoomstufe 1 angezeigt werden sollen.

Apple XDR Display P3-1500 Nits

I'm experiencing an issue with yEd on my Mac. When my display is set to use the Apple XDR Display P3-1500 nits color profile, yEd does not function properly — the entire application window appears completely blank (white screen), and nothing is visible.

However, when I switch to a different color profile (like the default sRGB or Display P3), yEd works normally again.

This suggests that there might be a compatibility issue between yEd and the Apple XDR P3-1500 nits color profile. Please let me know if there's a workaround or if this can be addressed in a future update.

Most of the time, when I drag a node onto a graph, I don't need to edit it's label.

But every time I create a group, I DO need to edit it's label.

At the moment, these two are linked - a single checkbox for "Edit Label On Create Node" in Preferences.

"Smart Free: Anywhere" places labels relative to the direction of their owner edge. So, if a label is above a left-to-right edge, the same label placement will result in a label below a right-to-left edge.

yEd currently does not offer a setting for "Smart Free: Anywhere" that ignores the edge direction.

You need to manually move the labels to the desired side of the edge.
Alternatively, you could try to work with several edge templates that differ only in the placement of their label with regards to the edge direction.

Well, "Auto-Rotate with Edge" is the way to go.

If you do not like "Auto-Flip", try the following:

Create a new diagram with only two nodes and one edge. Add a label to said edge and configure said label to use "Auto-Rotate with Edge" but turn off "Auto-Flip".
Create a user-defined palette section and add the edge from step one to said palette section. (Right-click the edge to open its context menu and choose "Add to Palette".)
Set the new style template in the new palette section as the default style for new edges. (Double-click the template to do so.)

This way you will not have to change the "Auto-Flip" property of your edge labels anymore.

That said, turning off "Auto-Flip" has the disadvantage of upside-down text in labels:

With "Auto-Flip" turned on, there is no upside-down text:

For vertical edges, there is no unambiguous solution for "no upside-down text". yEd uses the same orientation for bottom-to-top and top-to-bottom edges, because this is one less different orientation and thus helps to slightly reduce visual "clutter".

Label Icon Fit To Dimensions Of Label

At the moment we have to set a fixed size for icons inside a label. I'd love to be able to have it just use the dimensions of the label itself, so if the label gets longer, the icon gets longer too.

The use case is using the icon to put a fancy background shape/frame around the label rather than just a rectangle.

It would even better if it would actually resize vector shapes properly rather than just stretch them, too (at the moment if you do Convert To Label on a shape node, then go into the label's icon properties and change the size, it stretches it, meaning the border changes width and radiuses become elliptic etc. There are numerous reasons why having to do Convert To Node -> resize manually -> Convert To Label again is irritating and a bad workaround).

Chances are none of yEd's layout algorithms can produce such a compact arrangement.

Still, there is a couple of things you can try:

After manually placing your nodes, run "Layout" -> "Edge Routing" -> "Orthogonal/Polyline" with reduced "Edge to Node Distance" and "Last Segment Length" values (e.g. set all of those to 5).
Arrange your diagram with "Layout" -> "Orthogonal" -> "Classic" with reduced "Grid", "Minimum First Segment Length", "Minimum Last Segment Length", and "Minimum Segment Length" values (e.g. set all of those to 5).
Do not try to print to a single sheet of paper, but use yEd's poster printing support instead (i.e. increase print options "Poster Rows" and "Poster Columns"). Use "File" -> "Print Preview" to find values for the two aforementioned settings that are suitable for your diagram's aspect ratio.

Structurally, this is not possible - i.e. a node can have at most one parent node.

You can simulate multiple parent nodes by using semi-transparent fill colors and manually placing the parent nodes such that they (partially) overlap. None of yEd's layout algorithms will respect this manual placement, though - i.e. as soon as you run any layout algorithm, the overlapping parent nodes will be moved away from each other.

The deletion of the library and starting the program from the mounted image as well as a complete uninstall and reinstall was applied.

Do you have any other fixes?

The files are only 4MB in size and the MAC memory is 48GB so that shouldn't be a problem.

yEd does not offer a way to enforce the side an edge connects to when you create a new edge or change/edit an existing edge.

However, some of yEd's layout algorithms will try to arrange your graph in such a way that all edges point in one direction. Most notably, "Layout" -> "Hierarchical" will do this. By default, edges will leave their source nodes at the bottom and enter their target nodes at the top. To change this behavior to have edges leave their source node at the top an enter their target node at the bottom, change setting "Orientation" to "Bottom to Top" on tab "General" in the algorithm's settings.

Additionally, if your graph is a tree, "Layout" -> "Tree" -> "Directed" behaves in a similar way (and also offers a "Orientation" setting to configure edge directions).
